Ton Voortman

Ton Voortman (1948) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and subsequently worked as an apprentice to sculptors Gust Romijn and Huib Noorlander. After a period working as a graphic designer and illustrator, he returned to sculpture. Since 2005, he has devoted himself fully to his artistic practice, working between studios in the Netherlands and France.

In his sculptures, Voortman explores the relationship between form, material and human presence. The female figure has been an important theme throughout his earlier work, in which body and clothing subtly merge into one another. Over time, his practice has evolved towards greater abstraction, exploring ideas of symbiosis and the tension between different forms and materials. His Associations in Bronze series represents an important development within this body of work.

Since 2019, Voortman has also been developing work under the name ANTONIEM. This experimental practice focuses on elemental and organic forms, exploring how sculpture can emerge from simplicity, proportion and material.
