De Praktijk Studio

A development programme for artists and productdesigners committed to building a strong, distinctive and sustainable professional practice.

De Praktijk Studio is designed for contemporary artists and product designers who recognise that the quality and potential of their work are not yet fully reflected in the way their practice is presented, understood and valued.

Not because the work lacks quality, but because building a successful professional practice requires more than creating exceptional work.
Strong work does not automatically find its place in the world. When positioning, presentation and communication remain underdeveloped, it becomes more difficult for collectors, commissioners, galleries and other professional audiences to recognise the significance and value of the work. As a result, opportunities for recognition, collaboration and sales often remain limited.
A strong professional practice requires clarity, coherence and conscious development. It is built through positioning, presentation, communication and strategic decision-making that together create a practice capable of growing sustainably over time.

De Praktijk Studio is not an art course. It is not a platform. And it is not a marketing programme. It is a professional development programme that focuses on the structure surrounding your work. Together we develop the foundations of your practice through positioning, portfolio development, pricing, branding, communication and long-term career development. Our goal is to help artists and product designers build practices that are not only artistically compelling, but also professionally coherent and relevant to the audiences, organisations and markets for which the work is intended.

As a practice becomes more clearly positioned, better presented and more consistently communicated, the likelihood increases that the work reaches the right people, is recognised for its value and finds meaningful opportunities for exhibition, collaboration and acquisition.

Strong Work Deserves a Strong Professional Practice
Many artists spend years developing remarkable work while their professional practice evolves in a fragmented way. Their portfolio expands without a clear narrative. Presentation and communication lack consistency. Different bodies of work are understood differently depending on the context. New opportunities arise, yet they rarely contribute to a coherent long-term direction. The result is that much of the potential of the work remains unrealised.
The challenge is rarely the work itself. The challenge lies in the relationship between the work, its positioning, its communication and the overall development of the professional practice.

At Dutch Luxury Design, we help artists make these connections visible, intentional and sustainable.
Rather than focusing on the creative process itself, we work on the professional framework surrounding the work. Together we develop four interconnected dimensions that determine how a practice grows, how it is recognised and how it creates cultural as well as economic value.

Four Dimensions of a Strong Professional Practice

Positioning
How is your work understood and distinguished?
Positioning is about more than describing what you make. It is about defining the place your work occupies within the wider cultural and professional landscape.
Together we explore the distinctive qualities of your work, the themes that connect your practice, the audiences for whom it is relevant, and the contribution it makes within contemporary art and design. A strong position enables others to understand not only what you create, but also why your work matters, what it represents and how it differs from the work of others. Clear positioning creates recognition, strengthens professional credibility and provides direction for future development.

Value & Communication
How do you communicate the value of your work?
Outstanding work deserves to be understood. We therefore develop the way your work is presented, communicated and valued through pricing, storytelling, branding and strategic communication.
This is not about marketing techniques or selling harder. It is about making the artistic, cultural and professional value of your work visible and understandable to the audiences you want to reach. When collectors, commissioners, galleries and other professional partners clearly understand what makes your work meaningful, opportunities for recognition, collaboration and acquisition naturally increase.

Practice Development
How does your practice function as a coherent whole?
A professional practice consists of much more than individual works. It includes the relationships between projects, series, portfolio, presentation, communication and the strategic choices that shape your development over time.
Together we examine where coherence already exists, where fragmentation occurs, and which elements strengthen—or weaken—the overall identity of your practice. Our goal is to create a practice that feels focused, coherent and professionally organised, allowing every aspect to reinforce the others.

Career Development
Where is your practice heading?
Career development is about more than preparing for the next exhibition, commission or sale.
Together we define a longer-term direction for your professional practice. We identify opportunities, establish priorities and make strategic choices that contribute to sustainable growth in recognition, relevance and economic value. Rather than pursuing isolated opportunities, we focus on building continuity. The objective is a practice that develops consciously, consistently and with purpose—one that is capable of evolving over time while remaining true to the integrity of the work.

What you will gain
By the end of the programme, you will have developed a professional practice that is stronger, more coherent and better positioned for long-term growth. You will leave with:

  • A clear and distinctive professional position
  • Coherence across your portfolio and presentation
  • Focus and structure within your practice
  • Understanding of the value and relevance of your work
  • Strong branding and communication
  • Alignment with collectors, commissioners, galleries and other relevant audiences
  • Confidence in making strategic decisions about your future
  • A solid foundation for sustainable recognition, professional development and economic value.

Ultimately, you will have a professional practice that is intentionally organised, strategically positioned and capable of supporting the continued development of your work.

Why this matters
Many artists believe they need greater visibility. Visibility, however, is rarely the real challenge. Visibility does not automatically create recognition. Recognition does not automatically create value. And value does not automatically lead to sustainable opportunities. Before any of these can happen, there must first be clarity. Clarity about:

  • what your work represents
  • who it is relevant for
  • the value it creates
  • how it should be presented
  • what distinguishes it from other work.

This is where De Praktijk Studio begins. By developing a professional practice that is coherent, strategically positioned and clearly communicated, artists create stronger foundations for exhibitions, commissions, collaborations, acquisitions and long-term career development.

How we work
We work with a carefully selected group of no more than twelve artists and product designers. This small-scale format allows us to provide intensive personal guidance throughout the programme. Depending on your development process, our work together may include:

  • individual mentoring
  • strategic development sessions
  • portfolio and positioning reviews
  • reflective conversations about direction and decision-making
  • development of your Makers Brand Guide
  • branding, communication and content strategy
  • continuous evaluation of your professional practice.

Sometimes this means refining. Sometimes simplifying. Sometimes restructuring. Sometimes letting go. The objective is always the same: to create greater clarity, stronger coherence and a more sustainable direction for your professional practice.

Programme Structure
The programme consists of two phases.

Phase 1 - Developing Your Makers Brand Guide
The first phase is an eight-week development programme. During this period we work together on the positioning, structure and communication of your professional practice. The outcome is your personal Makers Brand Guide, including:

  • the strategic positioning of your work and practice
  • the essence of your maker identity
  • A clear communicationplan & content strategy.

More than a document, the Makers Brand Guide becomes the strategic foundation for your future development. The process itself is equally valuable. Through continuous dialogue, reflection and strategic thinking, participants often gain entirely new perspectives on their work, their practice and the direction of their career.

Phase 2 - Implementation & Ongoing Mentoring
The programme does not end with the Makers Brand Guide. Based on your ambitions, goals and strategic direction, we continue to support the implementation of your development plan. This may include:

  • implementation of your communicationplan & content strategy
  • ongoing progress reviews and evaluations
  • further development of your positioning and visibility
  • guidance around exhibitions, collaborations and professional opportunities
  • continued mentoring in the long-term development of your practice.

By strengthening communication, positioning and presentation in a coherent way, we increase the likelihood that your work reaches the right audiences and creates meaningful professional opportunities. The result is a practice that supports the sustainable development of your work, your career and its cultural and economic value.

Who is it for?
De Praktijk Studio is intended for contemporary artists and product designers who:

  • Are committed to developing their professional practice
  • Believe their work deserves greater recognition than it currently receives
  • Seek greater focus, coherence and strategic direction
  • Want to strengthen their position within relevant professional contexts
  • Are willing to critically reflect on their own practice
  • Aim to build a sustainable career over the long term.

Selection & Admission
We work with a maximum of twelve participants per programme. Admission takes place through a personal intake conversation in which we discuss your current practice, your ambitions, the potential of your positioning and the mutual fit between your development goals and the programme. This allows us to create a group of artists and product designers who are ready to take the next step in the development of their professional practice.
