The creation of the ceramic art of Swanica Ligtenberg is inspired by her spiritual connection with Mother Earth.
She is known for her Horsehair Raku technique. She takes the work out of the kiln at 600 degrees Celsius and then burns the horsehair onto the shard and/or glaze. She also burns sugar and feathers and ferric chloride which gives a brown color and beautiful shine. Her “Kamakura Red” work is inspired by the texture and red color of the Kamakura “Bori” Japanese woodcarving. She lived in Japan for 7 years. Red is the symbol for love, passion and strength.
Recently, she rediscovered the joy of using richly colored briefs and engraving. This resulted in a completely new development in play with shape and decoration in combination with her characteristic horsehair raku decoration.
Her warm-coloured works express elegance and harmony through a play of form, abstract designs, interplay of line and form, and surface treatment.
