Ben Kapteijns

My name is Ben Kapteijns and I work alternately in the French Corrèze and in Maasdorp Broekhuizenvorst (Limburg). The countryside of the Corrèze has a small-scale and quiet nature. There are countless small villages here, sometimes almost deserted, where friendly people live and work.

I use various working methods such as ceramic shaping, turning, hand shaping and decorating and these forms are closely related to each other. I produce installations of floating sculptures, sculptural ceramics and large-format bowls and frescos.

Firing wood ovens is a mysterious and wonderful event, especially at night when the elongated flames and masses of sparks rise high above the chimney.

This creates a magical and spectacular atmosphere. The art of fire is not expressed in the beautiful for the sake of the beautiful, but the beautiful as an answer to the inner needs of life itself.
